Waldorf-Inspired Virtual Classes

MathClass8

Lotus & Ivy provides live, interactive Waldorf math classes online for 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade. We follow the Jamie York Math Academy curriculum for our live math classes. 2024 - 2025 Class 8 Math

8th Grade Math

Our approach to math is to make it meaningful for the students. We bring real-world application to our lessons, and we help the students see the patterns and beauty of math that exist all around them in the natural world.

In our Eighth grade math class, we continue building on pre-algebra concepts from 7th grade, and our geometry lessons become more advanced compared to seventh grade. As in prior years, we do not rely on, rote procedures, but lead students to discover theorems on their own. This is one of the great beauties of the Waldorf math curriculum.

Our 8th grade math class meets two days per week. A workbook, Making Math Meaningful, Grade Eight, is required as part of their supply list.

Our Class 8 Math Lessons are live, and students are invited to interact with the teacher and ask questions as part of class time.

Class 8 Two-Day Math Topics

● Area and Volume of Polygons and Polyhedra

● Number bases, binary numbers, how computers work, Computer memory & ASCII code, Computer

algorithms

● Square root algorithm

● Pythagorean Theorem with applied problems

● Proportions, rates, ratios, density

● Dimensional Analysis including metric measurement conversions

● Review of 7 th grade percentages.

● Percents and growth

● Review of 7th grade algebra; order of operations; distributive property

● Algebra: linear equations

● Puzzles and Problem Solving

Homework, Group Work, and Grading

In addition to the individual homework, students will be assigned to a math group where they will meet once a week outside of class time, via Zoom, to work on group math assignments.  The students can work with their group mates to determine a convenient time for all members.  The group meeting should last about 45 minutes each week. Class 8 students can expect to spend about 2-3 hours outside of math class on individual math homework.

Assessments are given, and we provide students with formal letter grades as we continue preparing them for grades in high school.

Students DO NOT need to be enrolled in Lotus & Ivy Main Lesson Classes to enroll in Lotus & Ivy Math courses.

PLEASE NOTE: THE MATH MAIN LESSON BLOCK FOR CLASS 8 IS GEOMETRY OF SOLIDS. THIS MAIN LESSON IS TAUGHT AS PART OF THE LOTUS & IVY CLASS 8 MAIN LESSON CLASS, NOT THE CLASS 8 MATH CLASS. TOGETHER, OUR CLASS 8 MAIN LESSON, GEOMETRY OF SOLIDS, AND CLASS 8 MATH CLASS MAKE THE FULL MATH CURRICULUM, WHICH PROVIDES A SOLID AND RIGOROUS MATH FOUNDATION.  Ask us about joining Main lesson just for the Geometry block.

WE OFFER MATH A LA CARTE OR IN ADDITION TO OUR MAIN LESSONS and/or COMPLEMENTS. Please contact us if you have questions.
