2024 - 2025 Class 5 Math
Our Class 5 Math Lessons are live and students are invited to interact with the teacher and ask questions as part of class time.
We offer two options for Class 5 math. The first option is our two-day per week class and the second option is our three-day per week class. The three-day per week class gives students an additional day with the teacher and more time to practice concepts. The two-day per week class is more accelerated and is recommended for the student who doesn’t need the extra time. Both classes cover the complete grade-level curriculum outlined below, but the two-day per week class may go more in depth into a topic since students in this class are ready to move at a faster pace with fifth grade foundational concepts.
Our approach to math is to make it meaningful for the students. We bring real-world application to our lessons, and we help the students see the patterns and beauty of math that exist all around them in the natural world. Calling forth a wonder for numbers is important in helping the students sense the beauty of the world in which they live.
In Fifth grade we review fraction operations from fourth grade and then introduce the four operations using decimals. As with all mathematical concepts, we help the students experience an understanding of the concept instead of presenting it as a rote procedure. Students in Fifth grade are introduced to geometry for the first time, setting the foundations for middle school geometry in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Geometry at Lotus & Ivy is colorful, artistic, while still bringing in the conventional geometric terms and concepts.

Teachers assign math homework for students to complete outside of class.
In addition to the individual homework, students will be assigned to a math group where they will meet once a week outside of class time, via Zoom, to work on group math assignments. The students can work with their group mates to determine a convenient time for all members. The group meeting should last about 45 minutes each week. Class 5 students can expect to spend 1.5 - 2 hours outside of math class on individual math homework. Assessments are given, but no formal grading is given until Class 7.
Students DO NOT need to be enrolled in Lotus & Ivy Main Lesson Classes to enroll in Lotus & Ivy Math courses.
PLEASE NOTE: THE MATH MAIN LESSON BLOCKS FOR CLASS 5 ARE GEOMETRY I & THE WONDER OF NUMBER AND DECIMALS & THE METRIC SYSTEM. THESE TWO MAIN LESSONS ARE TAUGHT AS PART OF THE LOTUS & IVY CLASS 5 MAIN LESSON CLASS, NOT THE CLASS 5 MATH CLASS. TOGETHER, OUR CLASS 5 MAIN LESSON CLASS AND CLASS 5 MATH CLASS MAKE THE FULL MATH CURRICULUM, WHICH PROVIDES A SOLID AND RIGOROUS MATH FOUNDATION.
WE OFFER MATH A LA CARTE OR IN ANY COMBINATION WITH OUR OTHER PROGRAMS. Please let us know if you have questions.
